Support for the AI Energy Management Alliance
“FERC has recognized that flexible AI data centers play an important role in supporting the integration of new AI infrastructure. The work now underway across the regions will determine how effectively that flexibility can translate into faster and larger interconnection. By bringing together leading companies across the AI value chain, the AI Energy Management Alliance can advance performance-based solutions that strengthen grid reliability, protect affordability for consumers, and support continued American innovation.” ~ Neil Chatterjee, Chief of Governmental Affairs at Palmetto & Former FERC Chair
“Flexible AI data centers can unlock faster and larger power connections by making better use of the grid we already have—improving reliability, reducing costs, and delivering compute when and where it’s needed. By advancing power-flexible AI at scale, AEMA is complementing FERC’s landmark fast-track data center reforms and helping maintain America’s global leadership in infrastructure, innovation, and cutting-edge technology.” ~ Peter Lake, Former Senior Director of Power for the White House National Energy Dominance Council
“As more and more Americans adopt AI, we can't let families foot the bill through higher energy costs. AEMA's work to keep energy affordable and reliable is critical to ensuring that American AI continues to innovate and every American shares in the benefits that AI has to offer." ~Secretary Gina Raimondo, 40th U.S. Secretary of Commerce and 75th Governor of Rhode Island
“With its orders to the grid operators this summer, FERC recognized that a large load able to manage its demand should be able to connect on terms that reflect it. The details are now being written region by region, and they will determine whether flexibility actually speeds interconnection while protecting other customers from cost shifts. The AI Energy Management Alliance can bring the AI and energy sectors to that work with practical, performance-based proposals, which is exactly what these proceedings need." ~ Allison Clements, Partner, ASG & Former FERC Commissioner
“The State Energy Offices in the 50 states and territories are advancing innovative energy solutions to help meet the challenges presented by historic electricity demand and affordability. State Energy Offices unique role in informing policy development and coordinating across regulated and unregulated power providers, communities, and technology leaders is essential to supporting new generation and transmission, efficiency, and flexible load management. AEMA’s focus on measurable, dependable flexibility is a timely contribution to the broader effort to support economic growth while protecting reliability and affordability.” ~ David Terry, President of NASEO
“As AI drives growth in electricity demand, it is clear that the power system cannot be scaled quickly enough to accommodate all the data centers that are planned. We have to engineer solutions that allow data center interconnections while ensuring grid reliability and efficient utilization of the power system. Data centers can be designed to support the power system by reducing demand and shifting loads during periods of grid stress, and to minimize reliability and stability risks by riding through transient events. These capabilities will also ensure the efficient utilization of the power system and mitigate unnecessary investments in power system infrastructure that would otherwise have to be borne by retail electricity consumers. The good news is that the wholesale market operators already provide the mechanisms for integrating this flexibility, and NERC is actively working on creating new standards to ensure the reliable interconnection of data centers. AEMA can send a clear message to policymakers and regulators that data center owners/operators are ready to integrate responsibly. We should prioritize the interconnection of data centers that commit to provide demand flexibility and transient ride through capabilities." ~ Gordon van Welie, Former CEO of ISO NE
From AEMA Members
“At AES, we recognize that the technologies we are connecting to the grid today, including load, storage, and supply, have much more capability than regulations and grid planning processes recognize. Through AEMA’s policy and related standards work, electricity stakeholders will be more equipped to formally embrace flexibility from these underutilized resources leading to a more affordable, resilient grid.” ~ Chris Shelton, SVP and Chief Product Officer at The AES Corporation
"Hyperscalers and neoclouds need rapid access to power to capture the massive AI opportunity, and grid power remains their absolute first choice. Camus is joining AEMA to support flexible interconnections between data center developers and utilities. By providing the real-time orchestration, we can unlock existing grid capacity and help operators scale data center sites quickly, cleanly, and reliably alongside host communities.” ~ Astrid Atkinson, CEO and co-founder of Camus Energy
“Generate is proud to join leaders across the data and energy sectors to launch AEMA. Meeting the unprecedented demand for power while maintaining the affordability and reliability of electricity supply to American energy consumers is the defining infrastructure challenge of the 21st century. Given the ever increasing role compute plays in the daily life of Americans, data centers are needed to provide this service. AEMA is focused on ensuring that these data centers are built and operated in a manner that is beneficial to the local host communities and strengthens the grid for the benefit of all electricity users.” ~ David Crane, CEO of Generate Capital
“We’re honored to have been selected for a board-level role at AEMA, the coalition shaping how flexible AI data centers connect to and support the grid. GridUnity’s platform is already the system of record for interconnection and grid planning at a majority of RTOs, ISOs, and transmission providers nationwide. That gives us the utility and grid-operator credibility to help turn the coalition’s ambitions into something the industry can actually put into practice.” ~ Brian Fitzsimons, CEO of GridUnity
“New approaches are needed to make better use of existing grid infrastructure. RWE has a long history of energy experience and joined the AI Energy Management Alliance (AEMA) to identify and develop ways to optimize energy performance and scale solutions that maintain grid stability and solve for issues impacting the future of energy delivery.” ~ Andrea Hu-Bianco, Senior Vice President of Engineering at RWE Americas
